• BUILDING PERMITS • 

In August 2018, Alberta municipalities issued $1.07 billion in building permits, a decrease of 10.0 per cent from August 2017. Nationally, building permits increased 4.3 per cent over the same time  period. Residential permits decreased 24.5 per cent year over year, while industrial increased 7.4 per cent, and commercial by 32.7 per cent, over August 2017. 


• HOUSING STARTS •

In Alberta, urban housing starts totalled 1,826 in September 2018, a year-over-year decrease of 23.7 per cent. Canadian starts decreased by 10.9 per cent over the same period. In Alberta, all unit types decreased, with semi-detached units experiencing the largest decrease of 30.1 per cent.


• LUMBER PRODUCTION •

Lumber production in Alberta was down 0.7 per cent in July 2018 to 741,700 cubic metres. Nationally, lumber shipments increased by 1.6 per cent to 5.5 million cubic metres compared to the same period last year.
