Chamber Expresses Thanks to Brooks City Council

The Brooks and District Chamber of Commerce would like to thank Brooks City Council for hearing our request for transparency in municipal budgeting at last night’s council meeting.

“The Chamber asked Council to hold an open house on the Budget after it passes first reading, but before it passes third reading and is passed into law,” said Sarah Bisbee. “Mayor Morishita indicated that they would provide us either a yes or no, and we are very excited to hear their reply. We certainly hope they will agree to our request for greater openness and transparency.” she added.

The Chamber has been seeking a change in the way that the City of Brooks conducts its annual budgeting exercise. The goal is to allow citizens and business owners the opportunity to provide feedback on the entire document before it is made law.

“We want to thank Council for allowing us an opportunity to put this proposal forward” said Kyle Franz, Director of Member Relations at the Chamber. “The privilege of speaking directly to our elected officials is one of the pillars of a healthy democracy and is not something we take for granted” he added.

The Chamber continues to work closely with the City on other important initiatives like the Shop Local at Christmas contest. More details at www.newellproud.com/shoplocalcontest.
