Are you a Locavore?

If you live in Brooks or the County of Newell, you should be! Locavores are those folks who choose food that is locally grown or locally produced. You only need to check out Newell Proud on Facebook to see just how blessed we are with produce and products made close to home.

The Brooks Corn Maze is making it easy to indulge your inner locavore! “We have a wide variety of locally grown, affordably priced pumpkins, traditional corn and squash for fall decorating,” said owner Michelle Gietz. “Everything we sell we have grown ourselves in our own pumpkin patch,” she added.

I can tell you from personal experience that the Corn Maze is a whack of fun! I took my six-year-old niece two weeks ago and we had a blast. Not only did we both get completely lost in the maze (yes, truly!) but we also saw bunnies, sheep and calves. And if that wasn’t enough, she got to pick her own locally grown pumpkin at the end. It was a pretty exciting day, especially for a little girl visiting from the city.

“About 50% of our customers are coming from Medicine Hat. They make an afternoon of visiting the corn maze, pick out some pumpkins and often stay for lunch or supper in town,” Gietz shared. So whether you are planning to Visit Newell or this is home, make sure to take advantage of this locally grown deal.

And don’t forget, pumpkins are for more than just Jack-O’-Lanterns! It’s the time of year for pumpkin pie, pumpkin-spice-everything and of course who needs sunflower seeds when you can have pumpkin seeds instead?

Members of the Chamber take note: Your get half price admission Sunday October 22nd! And as an added bonus, pumpkins are buy one get one free for Members of the Chamber (a $3-5 dollar value, also valid only on October 22).

Here at the Chamber we might be biased, but we think eating local just tastes better (and supporting members of the Chamber of Commerce is always in good taste!).
